No one ever said it out loud but the disapproving looks, hushed whispers and sly smiles never left any room for doubt. People used to constantly judge me for being a girl whose closest companions were boys. While friendship never discriminates between genders but in our society trouble brews when you are girl who has more friends from the opposite sex. I realised this only when my mother once asked me, “Don’t you have any other friends than Rohan, Aashish and Vikrant?” I was shocked. Ten years later, when I was celebrating my 29th birthday, one of my uncles commented, “Beta, it seems you have very few female friends.” I didn’t dignify his question with an answer.
